Sir Sam’s Ski Resort – Day 1 can be found here.
Up bright and early at 7 am. There was a bit of noise late last night as some of the neighbours rang in the new year with fireworks, but it’s hard to begrudge that. We’re hopeful it means that the slopes will be quiet on new years morning.
The property we rented is notionally ski-in and ski-out, but the recent downpour means that we’re dealing with spring skiing conditions. Not even a fresh dump of snow was enough to open the far lift this morning.

It is pretty to look at, however.
So we had to drive to Sir Sam’s, which wasn’t exactly a massive imposition – despite my getting us turned around on the private forest road. But we soon had that sorted, and arrived at the hill roughly 5 minutes after we first set off. The property manager had warned us that we should have winter tires and all-wheel-drive, and for very good reason due to the slippery, unplowed roadway – but we had both, so it wasn’t an issue.
There were only a handful of cars in the parking lot, and it took only a few minutes to unload the equipment out of the roofbox. Having stayed at other ski-in, ski-out properties that required a ‘brief’ walk (read: a long trudge through the woods, and an uphill hike at the end of the day), this is arguably the better approach.
We had bought tickets online a week earlier, and were pleased to discover that our tickets would be discounted by 25% due to the poor weather. They weren’t able to pull up our tickets at the outdoor window, but they were able to find them at the indoor kiosk. The ticketing process took perhaps 5 minutes in total.
And then – we were off. Initially only the Main Street chairlift and the ‘magic carpet’ (aka the time tunnel) were open, but they soon opened the Eagle View lift. And despite the somewhat-slushy conditions, we all had a great time.

Particular favourites included ‘Banana’ and ‘Parkway’.

We were out there for more than two hours, and then it was time to head to the chalet to beat the lunch rush. Top choices there included chicken fingers, hot dogs, fries and a chipotle mayo grilled cheese.

The fries in particular were massive. We likely could have shared a single box instead of each ordering our own.
There’s also a more formal pub-type restaurant as part of the chalet, so we’re going to try that out tomorrow. The menu looks pretty good:

By then, the hill was getting busier – though still not bad.

Regardless, it was time to head back to our rental. I took a nap while the kids played – first outdoors and then in the basement – then we convened upstairs for a round of Dungeons and Dragons before the kids once more went outside.
We made some homemade pizza, and then it was time for the kids to turn in – so we can do it all again tomorrow. Although maybe we’ll manage to toss them in hot tub for a change of scene.
